If you really want to treat your out-of-town guests to a gourmet beach dining experience this summer, take them to Le Papagayo’s in Leucadia. Or, if you just want to treat yourself to an exquisitely prepared and served meal in the heart of North County, visit this coastal treasure and its proud owner, Francois Patanchon.

The ambiance can’t be outdone. The wait staff will cater to your needs professionally and courteously, and the food is carefully and artfully presented! Every garnish and detail of every dish is so delicately crafted it truly is art on your plate. Speaking of art, each area of the restaurant displays original artwork from local artists  - different styles for different areas; it’s like dining in an art gallery.

And the music! Le Papagayo’s has live music every night varying from blues to jazz to classic rock to Flamenco. The night I visited, Jimmy Patton was playing acoustic guitar, and the music certainly added to the lively conversation and joyous mood of all the diners. Jimmy’s Flamenco really sets the guitar on fire! You simply must go see him. Several people, including me, were taking photos of him on their cell phones.

The train going by outside makes for an unusual accompaniment to the convivial mood inside. People perk up and look out, the talking and laughter gets louder and even more animated, and the evening just keeps getting better and better. Many times I noticed a diner from one table going over to another table as if they knew each other. My guess is that there is a loyal following for Le Papagayo’s from all the local residents. The beach community in Leucadia loves “The Parrot,” like all those who discover it for the first time as I did.

Their food is Pacific Island Cuisine with a French Mediterranean influence. I found every dish I sampled to be absolutely decadent, beginning with the Butternut Squash Raviolis (sweet little treats in a rich creamy pineapple tangerine sauce). The Diver Scallops, another appetizer offering, are served on a clam shell with a tasty, creamy chorizo sauce that keeps them so light and tender it’s unbelievable! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I tried the Havana Sautéed Shrimp – wow – I love shrimp anyway, but these were the best I have ever had. Served in a garlic lime sauce, they melt in your mouth. But you must try the Australian Lamb Chops served with garlic mashed potatoes; simply perfect.

Le Papagayos offers a full bar with some very original cocktail items, plus wine and beer. They also serve exotic coffees and yummy deserts. Visit their website, and then call for reservations. This place is so popular you’ll need them.

Francois will treat you to an evening you won’t soon forget.
